Today I will be writing to the speaker of Speaker of the Ekurhuleni Council, seeking a full report on the whereabouts of Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina, who has seemingly abdicated his mayoral duties. There is growing concern regarding Masina’s health and his ability to return to office to begin his handover report given that his term of office has all but expired.
It is a matter of public record that, like his counterparts in the Cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane, the Mayor contracted Covid-19 in early July, of which the residents we were properly informed. However, it appears the Mayor has since taken the opportunity, occasioned by his mandatory Covid-19 isolation, to further isolate himself from his responsibilities to the residents of Ekurhuleni. This is unacceptable.
Residents deserve a present Mayor, fully capable of executing the duties that he requested them to allow him to perform. In the event his absence from the line of duty is occasioned by continued ill-health, then the residents ought to be properly informed of this so they may wish him a speedy recovery. He is the first citizen of this city and the state of his well-being is a matter of public interest as his inability to perform his duties on these grounds has a direct impact on service delivery.
Conversely, if, as it appears, his absence is a result of him attempting to evade having to deal with the critical issues of corruption, RDP housing scandals, and the runaway hijacking of buildings across which he has done nothing about to this day, then he should stop playing hide and seek, do the honourable thing and resign!
In any event, he has proven himself incapable of rising to the occasion and capably responding to the demands of high political office in service of the general public as he has been too occupied with advancing the narrow factional interests of his cronies.
There will be no Ghost Mayor in the City of Ekurhuleni on ActionSA’s watch, and we will not countenance a state of inaction and paralysis in the delivery of services to the residents.
ActionSA stands ready to provide an alternative to the broken political system that has failed South Africans. We are assembling a team of South Africans committed to public service and not service of political parties, who have the skills, experience, and knowledge to advance South Africa.
