Multi-Party Pact Convention

ActionSA has started talks with a group of 7 political parties – ActionSA, DA, IFP, FF Plus, NFP, UIM and SNP for the express purpose of exploring a multi-party pact ahead of the 2024 elections. This pact could achieve multi-party co-operation that publicly builds confidence in a political alternative in South Africa.

The pact is intended to produce a coherent vision and set of priorities for an incoming government that must be publicized so that cooperation is built on a positive alternative rather than being formed exclusively on the basis of opposing the ANC.

It is important that parties are guided by a strong set of principles in the discussions about forming a pact.
Which principles should ActionSA be guided by (you can choose more than one option):

Getting the ANC out of office. Keeping the EFF out of a coalition with the ANC. A clear alternative direction for South Africa. A shared understanding of the priority issues of a new government. Common ground on plans to grow our economy and create jobs. Common ground on plans to end load shedding. Common ground on plans combating crime, corruption and drugs. Common ground on plans to reform our education system.

Currently, the parties involved in these discussions are ActionSA, DA, IFP, FF Plus, NFP, UIM and SNP.
Do you believe that ActionSA should form part of a multi-party pact with these parties?

The parties involved in the discussions have different ideas of how many parties should be involved in the pact. Is it more important that the pact is made up of:

A broad church of parties that may have to agree to disagree sometimes but can win a majority. A smaller, tight-knit group of parties who agree about more but may not receive a majority.

In order for 2024 to be the change election in South Africa, a multi-party pact must be capable of inspiring millions of South Africans to register and vote for change.

One element of a potential pact may be a declaration that parties that join the pact cannot go into coalition with the ANC after having campaigned under the change agenda. Such a declaration:

Parties should commit to not enter any form of coalition arrangement with the ANC under any circumstances. Parties should commit to not enter any form of coalition arrangement with the ANC only if the parties in the pact can achieve a majority. Parties should not make any commitments to remain flexible for possible scenarios after the elections that may require some form of working relationship with the ANC.

If parties agree to enter a pact they will still contest elections as individual parties. How should parties who sign the pact treat one another in the election campaign:

All is fair in love and war, after all it is an election campaign. Parties in the pact must not attack one another because this will destroy confidence in the pact.

Coalitions at a local government level have been unstable in some municipalities after the 2021 local government elections. The impact of this upon me as a voter is:

Nothing, coalitions are the future whether we like them or not and a pact is a good step to fixing some of these challenges of coalitions. It makes me either less likely to vote or consider voting for the ANC – you know what they say; better the devil you know.

One potential way to build confidence in the pact parties achieving a majority would be to stage joint events during the election campaign to showcase commonly agreed approaches to fixing South Africa’s greatest challenges. This would:

Make me more likely to vote for one of these parties because I can see that they can work together in my interests. Make no difference to the chances of me voting because during the election they will say or do anything for my vote.
