ActionSA notes the death of eight zama-zama illegal miners; one South African, three Mozambicans and four Zimbabweans, who died, while busy with illegal mining activities.
The 8 were found dead at a closed Twikenhem mine in Fetakgomo Tubatse in the Sekhukhune Region, when water coming from heavy rains pushed the soil that blocked the only entry and exit point they were using, causing them to suffocate.
While we lament the loss of life, this could have been mitigated if the government was serious about dealing with illegal mining.
On September 2022, the ANC-led government released a joint parliamentary statement from the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy together with the Portfolio Committee on Police and the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs concerning illegal mining hotspots in Limpopo Province.
This statement seemed to be an honest attempt to address the surge of illegal immigrants mining in the province, however, true to ANC culture of establishing ineffectual task teams, to date, nothing has been done by all portfolios to remedy the issue.
Our Immigration Act is very clear on how to deal with this type of influx of immigration and especially on illegal immigration. We are of the view that no political will exists to deal decisively with this endemic problem to South Africa. The effects of poor border control have seen South Africa under the grip of crime, economic squeeze and a seemingly unending plethora of socials ills.
We call on Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to ensure more stringent measures are implemented on our borders.
In addition to this, we call on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to expedite the process of rehabilitating mines to ensure that economic opportunities can be unlocked for the scores of unemployed South Africans who watch on as illegal immigrants seize economic opportunities illegally from these mines.
The ANC government continues to fail to provide leadership on the issue of undocumented foreign nationals.
ActionSA commits to pursing an effective and long-lasting solution to these economic and social issues caused by historic ANC misgovernment. Our policies on Social Justice, Rule of Law and Immigration control, informed by ordinary South Africans provide a glimmer of hope to the sovereignty of our state and a turnaround from the currently failing ANC government.
