ActionSA notes with concern the recent admission by KZN Health Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Dr. Imran Keeka, that the province is indeed facing a severe medication shortage crisis.
While this acknowledgment is long overdue, it exposes his previous attempts to mislead the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal when he vehemently denied the crisis that we had already brought to his attention.
During a radio interview yesterday, Dr. Keeka revealed that the Health portfolio committee conducted oversight visits at various healthcare facilities in November last year and was aware of the medication shortages. This raises the question: who were they trying to deceive when they later denied this fact?
More importantly, why did the entire portfolio committee remain silent when the MEC lied in February that there were no medication shortages, despite knowing the truth?
The question must be asked: Why did Dr. Keeka dismiss our evidence when we first raised alarm over the dire state of healthcare in KZN?
Why did he choose to mislead the public instead of admitting that he was unaware of the true situation?
Now that the portfolio committee has conducted additional oversight visits, he suddenly acknowledges the crisis-proving that he was either deliberately misleading the public or woefully ignorant of his own portfolio’s challenges.
What makes his hypocrisy even more alarming is that he previously suggested legal action against ActionSA for conducting an oversight visit at Benedictine Hospital in Nongoma. He attempted to discredit our efforts to expose the truth, yet he now acknowledges our tindings.
This is not just an embarrassing turn, it is proof that his leadership and critical thinking skills have compromised due to the GPU.
Dr. Keeka’s role as the chairperson of the Health Portfolio Committee is to hold the MEC and the Department of Health accountable. However, instead of taking the fight to those responsible for this crisis, he seems more interested in fighting ActionSA, a party that is simply doing what he should have been doing from the start.
It appears that he has a personal vendetta against our movement, prioritising political games over the wellbeing of KZN citizens.
The people of Kwazulu-Natal deserve leaders who act with integrity and urgency, not those who only recognise crises when it becomes politically convenient.
ActionSA remains committed to ensuring that the Department of Health is held accountable and that citizens receive the healthcare they deserve.
Dr. Imran Keeka’s Flip-Flopping on KZN’s Medication Crisis is a Betrayal of Public Trust
