Gauteng in Action

2 May 2025

From the Desk of

The Provincial Chairperson

Dear Actioneers,

The month of April has proved once again that principled leadership and unwavering commitment to the South African people can deliver real results.

On the 1st and 2nd of April, ActionSA took a bold and principled stance by conditionally supporting the Fiscal Framework in both the Finance Committee and Parliament. Central to that decision was our explicit rejection of Treasury’s proposal to increase VAT and adjust income tax brackets by inflation. We warned from the outset that such regressive measures would devastate ordinary South Africans already buckling under the cost-of-living crisis.

Our position was met with mockery and scepticism, with many political actors saying the reversal was “impossible.” But we stood firm, mobilised behind the scenes, and built consensus across nine political parties – including the ANC – to reverse the VAT hike. While others rushed to the courts or issued hollow soundbites, we negotiated, persuaded, and ultimately delivered.
Today, the VAT increase is officially scrapped – and South Africans are better off because ActionSA led from the front.

Let no one be fooled: this was not a courtroom victory; it was a political one. And while many now scramble to claim credit, we remind South Africans that it was ActionSA who first said “VAT will not increase,” and it was ActionSA who fought to make it so. As the saying goes, “success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.”

We are proud that it is ordinary South Africans – not politicians – who are the true winners of this victory. This is what people-centred democracy looks like.

As ActionSA in Gauteng, our mission remains unwavering. From tackling load-shedding and broken infrastructure to restoring dignity to our communities, we are building a Province that works for all – brick by brick, ward by ward.
We urge every Actioneer to become a champion of change. Encourage your family and friends to register to vote via our portal.

Membership booklets are available across all regions for those paying by cash. Get involved in your local membership and visibility campaigns. The road to 2026 Local Government Elections starts with you.
