ActionSA Welcomes Dr. Nandipha Magudumana’s Failed Extradition Appeal

ActionSA welcomes the court’s decision to dismiss Dr. Nandipha Magudumana’s appeal against her extradition from Tanzania. This ruling reaffirms that South Africa is no refuge for those who commit heinous crimes under the cloak of professional respectability. Her bid to escape accountability has failed, and she must now face the consequences of her role in the Thabo Bester escape and the murder of a young man whose family still awaits justice.

From the beginning, ActionSA stood with the victim’s family, demanding full transparency around the charred body used to stage Bester’s fake suicide at Mangaung Correctional Centre. We attened the court proceedings in solidarity, underscoring our ongoing commitment to justice.

Magudumana’s involvement cannot be downplayed. She fraudulently claimed the body used in the escape and misled authorities through a false affidavit. Disturbingly, body parts believed to be linked to the victim were later found in a river, a grim reminder of the brutality involved. The charges brought against her include: fraud; violating a body; corruption; arson; assisting an inmate escape; harbouring and concealing an escaped prisoner; and defeating the ends of justice.

Serious questions remain unanswered:
• Who was the man whose body was smuggled into prison?
• How did his corpse get through maximum security?
• Who killed him, and why?

Magudumana holds key information and must now be compelled to answer.
ActionSA condemns the institutional failures of the Departments of Correctional Services and Health, along with G4S, whose negligence or collusion enabled one of South Africa’s most brazen prison escapes. In 2023, ActionSA laid criminal charges against all three.

South Africa cannot be a place where the rich and well-connected manipulate systems and flee justice. Magudumana, once a respected doctor, betrayed the public trust. She must now account fully for her actions, not from a place of privilege, but from a prison cell.
This case is not only about Bester’s escape, but the life stolen to make it possible. The young man’s murder demands answers, and ActionSA will not rest until justice is served for every victim, regardless of how powerful the perpetrators may be.

We welcome this ruling as a step toward restoring justice and the rule of law. There is no place in our communities for those who exploit state systems to commit crimes. Dr. Magudumana must now rot in jail and confront the full weight of the pain and shame she helped inflict on this nation.

ActionSA will continue to stand by the family, pursue full accountability, and ensure South Africans never forget those who thought they could escape justice.
