ActionSA On the Passing of Struggle Stalwart Gertrude Shope

ActionSA wishes to convey its condolences to the family of Gertrude Shope and her political party, the ANC, following the passing of this respected antiapartheid fighter, trade unionist, and former president of the ANC Women’s League.

In case many might have forgotten, or are unaware, Shope re-established the ANC Women’s League inside the country – having been elected its president – after the unbanning of the former liberation movement in the early 1990s. She had also led its activities while in exile.

She joined democratic South Africa’s first parliament, following the historic elections of 1994, and served one of democratic South Africa’s founding lawmakers.

It is the right thing to always remember the historic contribution of leaders like Shope and to ensure that their selfless contribution is never forgotten.
