City in Disarray Due to the Department’s Inability to Appoint a Service Provider
Charlotte Zitha
ActionSA Councillor in Ekurhuleni
The City of Ekurhuleni is facing an unprecedented crisis due to the Department of Community Services MMC Bridget Thusi’s delay in appointing pauper and indigent burial services providers, leaving the city unable to assist vulnerable families with funeral costs during a time of need.
A critical situation is unfolding as three service provider contracts expired on June 30, 2025, without a new tender in place. This demonstrates lack of urgency and commitment to adequately serve Ekurhuleni residents and poses significant risks, particularly the potential for government mortuaries to become overwhelmed with stored corpses.
ActionSA demands accountability from the department and will be writing to MMC Thusi, seeking answers on the cause of this departmental trance. We unequivocally insist that Ekurhuleni residents deserve better and will not tolerate incompetence that compromises essential services.
