ActionSA Welcomes Decision to Allow Back e-Hailing Operators in Maponya Mall, Calls for Decisive Action From Government to Protect Every Citizen

ActionSA welcomes the decision to allow e-hail drivers to operate in Maponya Mall, Soweto after the death of an e-hailing driver last week. This move acknowledges the importance of the role of active citizenry as was displayed by residents.

Since this is not the first time that e-hailing operators have been harassed by taxi operators at the mall nor is Maponya the only location where e-hailing operators are not free to operate, we call on government to take proactive measures in ensuring that the rule of law reigns supreme in this industry that is so pivotal to Gauteng’s economic activities.

ActionSA is deeply concerned about government’s glaring failure to address ongoing lawlessness and intimidation by some taxi operators in our communities. The safety and well-being of residents should always be the top priority.

As a party rooted in the rule of law, we strongly condemn any form of violence, intimidation or lawlessness by taxi operators or any other group and urge the department of transport, Gauteng Traffic Police, Metro and SAPS enforce the routes and licenses of taxi operators, and arrest those who don’t comply.

We cannot afford to have a government that sleeps on the job whilst potentially dangerous issues are brewing, only to react once residents start demonstrations or when lives are lost. ActionSA is committed to a safe, economically vibrant Gauteng with law-abiding residents.
