During Wednesday’s council meeting, ActionSA voted against the Municipality’s proposed water and sanitation infrastructure surcharge of R1.50.
According to the Municipality, households consuming 20kl of water per month will face an increase of R40 on their monthly bills. In addition, those connected to the sewerage system will incur a further R30 charge, resulting in a monthly surcharge of R70 per consumer – excluding VAT.
While we acknowledge the urgent need for infrastructure repair, it is unacceptable that residents are being asked to carry the cost of the Municipality’s failure to properly maintain and plan for its water and sanitation infrastructure.
The reality is that eThekwini residents are already struggling under high tariffs, and any additional charges, no matter how small they may appear, will further dent the pockets of ordinary households.
The Municipality must take responsibility for its own failures and fix these issues without shifting the financial burden onto residents. This pattern of poor governance and mismanagement cannot continue.
It is deeply disappointing that the ANC, EFF, and IFP supported this surcharge, demonstrating once again that they have no interest in protecting the well-being of residents, but are only intent on milking residents dry.
ActionSA will continue to stand firmly against measures that exploit residents and will fight for a Municipality that puts the people first.
