ActionSA Opens Candidate Applications For Local Government Elections

ActionSA has officially opened the next phase of its candidate selection processes for the upcoming Local Government Elections.

The first phase involved branches being launched across the country, with a focus on identifying the best candidates to become ward councillors. This new phase focuses on ActionSA going to the ground and engaging communities and community-based organisations to identify the most suitable leaders to fix service delivery.

Local government is in a state of collapse. Municipal finances are broken, service delivery has ground to a halt or has only been the privilege of a few, and the interests of residents have been set aside for status and self-enrichment. At the heart of this is a system that continues to produce ward councillors who lack the skills, dedication and leadership to represent their communities in councils. South Africans deserve a better calibre of leadership.

ActionSA leaders like Dr Nasiphi Moya, Herman Mashaba and Athol Trollip have a proven track record of fixing broken municipalities. They are joined by another generation, including Xolani Khumalo and Mary Phadi, and others soon to be announced, who will rise to this standard of leadership set within ActionSA.

These leaders have a record of service in delivering basic services, restoring the rule of law, reviving municipal finances, growing the economy, and creating real jobs. Importantly, they have proven that South Africans have a choice beyond the yellow and blue parties. There is a third way, one which prioritises action over words and gets the job done.

We seek candidates who truly recognise the responsibility that comes from serving as a councillor, and who have the background and passion for their communities needed to turn local government around. ActionSA’s candidate selection policy does not allow any candidates to apply who have a criminal record, who owe the municipality money, or who cannot prove a track record of community service.

We call on South Africans who love their country and want to play a part in fixing our broken cities, towns and villages to apply. Applications close at 17h00 on 31 May 2026.
