ActionSA Calls for Full Transparency Following SAPS Raid on Cape Town Mayco Member

ActionSA is deeply concerned by reports that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has raided the home and office of another City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee (Mayco) member as part of an ongoing investigation linked to allegations that a Cape Town businessman attempted to bribe the City Manager with R1.4 million.

The City of Cape Town frequently presents itself as a “City that Works for All”, yet media reports continue to expose allegations of corruption, tender irregularities and criminal networks involving municipal officials. These allegations now appear to have reached the highest levels of city administration, including members of the Mayoral Committee and other senior officials.

ActionSA welcomes the work being undertaken by the SAPS Commercial Crime Investigation Unit to uncover any wrongdoing and hold those responsible accountable. Residents deserve a municipality focused on service delivery, not one distracted by allegations of corruption and maladministration.

It is particularly concerning that the raids reportedly involved the office and residence of the Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Siseko Mbandezi. While the Mayor has sought to downplay the significance of the raids by claiming they are merely part of an evidence-gathering process and not indicative of wrongdoing, this explanation raises more questions than answers. If there is no connection whatsoever, the public is entitled to know why investigators believe evidence relevant to the case may be found in the possession of a senior city official.

Reports further suggest that the investigation is linked to contractors seeking the extension or renewal of municipal contracts. If true, these allegations strike at the heart of the City’s repeated claims of clean governance and a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.

ActionSA will continue to monitor developments closely and calls for the investigation to proceed without fear, favour, or political interference. The people of Cape Town deserve full transparency and accountability from those entrusted with public office.
