ActionSA Submits Legislature Questions to Mpumalanga Public Works Department on Alleged Employment Delays on the R573 Moloto Road Project

ActionSA has submitted questions for written reply to the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport following allegations from residents of Vezubuhle in Thembisile Hani Local Municipality regarding delays in employment opportunities linked to the SANRAL R573 Moloto Road upgrade project.
Residents allege that they were recruited and informed they would commence work during April 2026. However, several months later, many claim they have still not been called to start work and have received little to no communication regarding the status of their appointments.
Recognising the Department’s oversight and coordinating role over provincial road infrastructure, ActionSA’s questions seek clarity on the recruitment process, whether the affected residents have been appointed, when successful applicants are expected to commence work, what engagement the Department has had with SANRAL and the appointed contractors, and what measures are in place to ensure transparent and fair recruitment of local labour.
Large public infrastructure projects must not only improve road safety and connectivity but also deliver meaningful economic opportunities for the communities in which they are implemented. Local residents deserve transparency, accountability and timely communication regarding employment opportunities that directly affect their livelihoods.
ActionSA expects the Department to provide comprehensive responses and, where necessary, engage SANRAL to ensure that the concerns raised by affected residents are urgently addressed.
ActionSA will continue to monitor this matter and hold all responsible stakeholders accountable to ensure that local communities benefit from this important public investment.
