ActionSA Sends Condolences On The Passing Of Music Icon, Babsy Mlangeni

ActionSA extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, fellow artists and countless South Africans mourning the passing of legendary musician Bernard “Babsy” Mlangeni, who passed away at the age of 83 years, following a short illness.

South Africa has lost more than a musician. We have lost a cultural giant whose voice, music and extraordinary life formed part of the soundtrack of generations of South Africans.

Born in Orlando East, Soweto, Babsy Mlangeni built a remarkable career spanning almost six decades. Despite losing his eyesight as a child, he refused to allow disability to define the boundaries of his life or his talent. Through determination, courage and extraordinary musical ability, he became one of the most recognisable voices in South African music.

Songs such as Sala Emma, Bua Nnete, Botsotso, Lonely Man and Umadlembathini became part of our collective cultural memory. His music crossed languages, generations and communities, reminding us of the unique power of the arts to bring people together.

His contribution extended beyond performing. Babsy Mlangeni challenged perceptions about people living with disabilities and demonstrated that talent, opportunity and determination can overcome barriers that society too often places in people’s paths. He also played a role in nurturing younger musicians and contributing to the development of South Africa’s rich musical heritage.

His contribution was recognised through numerous honours, including a South African Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and further recognition of his contribution to the arts and to artists living with disabilities.

As ActionSA’s MMC Candidate for Sports, Arts & Culture in Johannesburg, I believe that the passing of Babsy Mlangeni should also remind us of our responsibility to preserve, celebrate and invest in the lives and legacies of our cultural and music legends.

Too often, we celebrate our artists only after they have passed away. We must do better. Our living legends deserve dignity, recognition, platforms and meaningful support while they are still with us. Their stories, music and knowledge must be documented and passed on to future generations.

Johannesburg, the city that gave birth to and nurtured so much of South Africa’s cultural heritage, must continue to be a home where artists can create, earn a living, develop their talents and leave lasting legacies.

To the Mlangeni family: may you find strength and comfort in knowing that Babsy’s gift touched millions of lives. His voice may have fallen silent, but his music will continue to reverberate.

On behalf of ActionSA, we honour Babsy Mlangeni’s remarkable life, his contribution to South African music and the barriers he broke throughout his illustrious journey.

Lala ngoxolo, Bra Babsy. Robala ka Kgotso.

Thank you for the music. Thank you for the legacy.
