ActionSA has taken note of Western Cape Premier Alan Winde’s admission to the Western Cape High Court that not a single affordable housing project has been completed in the Cape Town CBD in nearly a decade. This is a damning admission at a time when ordinary Capetonians are being priced further and further out of the areas where they work.
In an affidavit submitted to the High Court, Winde was forced to admit that while a number of affordable and social housing projects are in the pipeline, no affordable housing project has been completed in the CBD since 2017. The City has reported that 14 sites have been released, while a further 39 parcels of land are being packaged or are in the process of being released, including 11 in the CBD.
A decade of planning, packaging and promises do not put a roof over a family’s head.
ActionSA believes Cape Town must stop treating affordable housing as a distant future promise and start delivering housing where people can actually afford to live, work and build their lives.
Our Make Cape Town Affordable Again plan recognises that housing, transport and economic opportunity are inseparable. When affordable housing is unavailable in well-located areas, working families are pushed to the outskirts of the city, where they pay more to commute and spend more of their lives stuck in traffic.
Cape Town cannot become a city where nurses, teachers, police officers, municipal workers, hospitality workers and young professionals are forced to live further and further away from the opportunities they help create.
The City and Province have access to strategically located public land. The question is no longer whether land exists — the question is why Capetonians are still waiting for delivery. ActionSA will take a fundamentally different approach.
Cape Town belongs to the people who live and work here, not just those who can afford to buy into it. ActionSA is excited to introduce its offering to ensure we Make Cape Town Affordable Again on Monday the 12th of October. Our offering includes plans that have been developed to ensure that Capetonians experience a much more affordable City.
