ActionSA Appalled by the State of HP Mokoka Library in Daveyton
Statement by Cllr Tumelo Tshabalala and Cllr Solly Klaas
ActionSA Ekurhuleni Councillors
ActionSA Ekurhuleni councillors Tumelo shabalala and Solly Klaas conducted an oversight visit at HP Mokoka Library in Daveyton following reports that the library has been closed for a period of a year.
During the visit, it was discovered that the main study area and the children’s section are not functional. The roof is leaking, as a result the ceiling and furniture in the library is damaged, making it a hazard for both the public and staff. Records show that since 2018 works orders have been submitted to officials, however, a response has not been forthcoming.
Libraries are essential for information access, learning support, community building and fighting misinformation. Communities access books, news and historical resources. Young people develop a love for reading, residents find a place to meet and connect with others and assist those who are new in the area integrate into the community as well as informing the public with facts rather than fiction or fake news.
ActionSA believes that:
– In order to unlock the full educational potential of our children we must prioritize the ability to read for meaning. This is the most fundamental requirement for achieving further education outcomes.
– Extracurricular activities are important for developing balanced individuals and provide opportunities for developing soft skills.
– All school children should have access to a range of wellresourced extra-curricular activities that their communities and libraries can offer.
ActionSA calls on MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate Ald Nomadlozi Nkosi and
MMC for Community Services Clir Bridget Thusi to prioritise the residents of Daveyton, ensure that HP Mokoka Library is refurbished, and the community can access a fully functional library.
