ActionSA Applauds Miss South Africa 2024 for Recognising People with Disabilities
Dr Eva Ntlatleng
ActionSA Gauteng Disability Forum Chairperson
ActionSA applauds the organisers of Miss South Africa 2024 for crowning Mia Le Roux, the first Miss South Africa with a disability, who is hearing impaired.
We believe that her accomplishment is an inspiration to people with disability, both at home and abroad, as it demonstrates that with passion and perseverance they can achieve greatness. Mia Le Roux is not only an ambassador for South Africa, but also a champion for people with disabilities.
According to World Health Organisation’s February 2024 data, more than a fifth of South Africa’s population have some form of hearing loss. In July 2023, sign language was declared an official 12th language in South Africa, so as to enable these 12,1 million South Africans access to equality, dignity and social inclusion.
ActionSA notes efforts made by the organisers of Miss South Africa 2024 to accommodate people with disabilities, by organising an interpreter for Mia during the pageant.
ActionSA would further like to extended our warmest congratulations to our Miss South Africa 2024, Mia Le Roux. May this year be one of hope, as you show South Africans, and the world, the benefits of fighting for an inclusive society, no matter the (dis)ability.
