ActionSA Applauds Speaker’s Decision to Convene Extra Ordinary Council Sitting

Following the removal of the former City Manager, City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, has called for an Extra-Ordinary Council. We welcome this as the first decisive step to finalising the appointment of a permanent Accounting Officer to stabilise the provision of services to the residents of Johannesburg.
ActionSA also notes yesterday’s appointment of an acting City Manager and will hold him to account to ensure that, in the intervening period, the city remains fixed on its mission of basic service delivery.
ActionSA believes it is critical to appoint an accounting officer that will play a critical role in stabilizing the City but most importantly, in ensuring that service delivery takes a centre stage.
The City of Johannesburg needs an impartial City Manager who will be able to spearhead the City of Johannesburg through the current tribulations. We demand the prioritisation of the restoration of Bree Street, addressing water crisis and electricity supply.
Residents of Johannesburg are yearning for a City Manager who will be able to account for every cent spent.
The City Manager must not act as a proxy of any political party, but a true servant of the more than 6 million residents of Johannesburg.
ActionSA Joburg Caucus applauds the Speaker of Council who has moved with speed to ensure that this matter finds expression in Council by calling for the Extra-ordinary Council.
Since ActionSA assumed leadership of the City’s legislative arm, we have seen a rise in transparency and sound decision-making.
ActionSA is not expecting the current acting City Manager to act permanently, we would like to see this position occupied in the space of three months.
