ActionSA Brings Hope to Forgotten Cape Communities

Yesterday, ActionSA conducted a  follow-up site visit with City of Cape Town officials in Kraaifontein.

The visit followed previous visits in July and early September when we discovered that the communities of Isigodini and Jeruselema had not only been living without access to basic services but had also been enduring hazardous conditions, including raw sewage flowing through the streets for over three years.

We are pleased to announce that our persistent engagement with the City has resulted in the community now awaiting the delivery of basic sanitation facilities, following a commitment made by City officials during our follow-up site visit.

This significant development follows a series of engagements sparked by our letter to the Mayor of Cape Town, in which we made an explicit demand that the City either fulfil its constitutional responsibilities or face legal action.

While it is regrettable that South Africans often receive a response from the government only when the spectre of legal action looms, ActionSA’s advocacy for the forgotten communities in the Western Cape demands that we explore every available avenue in our continued fight to ensure that every community is afforded access to basic water and sanitation, as well as an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being.

ActionSA will maintain proactive oversight to ensure that the City of Cape Town fulfils its commitment. We are committed to ensuring that the communities of Isigodini and Jeruselema can finally have their dignity restored after enduring three harrowing years without basic services.
