ActionSA Calls for Improved Living Conditions and Accountability in Moeggesukkel and Emabhangalweni Communities of NMB

ActionSA, once again, witnessed the disdain shown by the NMBM towards temporarily relocated residents at the recent launch of the ward 53 ActionSA branch in Moegesukkel in Kariega.

The living conditions that the people residing there must endure are appalling which compounds the obvious lack of social consideration of people when resettling vulnerable members of society.

The community of Moegesukkel (an apt name) live under terrible conditions where there is no sanitation provision, refuse collection, or adequate flood lighting. During our visit on Saturday (30 September 2023), we bore witness to how the elderly, pregnant women, and children live with raw sewage running down their dirt roads and with uncollected refuse at their doorsteps.

The situation in Moeggesukkel is not an exception but rather highlights a clear pattern of how the Metro approaches the relocation of vulnerable residents as a mere “tick box” exercise. The people of “Emabhangalweni” (Temporary placement settlement) in Motherwell have been living in conditions that mirror those of Moeggesukkel.

The Emabhangalweni Project was intended to house people with special needs and the elderly; yet the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro houses wheelchair-bound residents in elevated bungalows, located far from inadequate and squalid ablution facilities, amidst raw sewage spills. These bungalows are also occupied by people who don’t qualify to be there, and this has resulted in horrible overcrowding.

We are well aware that such projects have certain economic gains for those who secure these relocation tenders. One is left with no doubt that there is inadequate oversight and monitoring throughout the commissioning and implementation of these projects, and furthermore, whether competent people and contractors are utilised to complete such work.

Under an ActionSA government, we envision a South Africa characterized by a capable, streamlined, and politically independent state, dedicated to delivering high-quality services to its residents in a cost-effective, efficient, and timely manner.

ActionSA will ensure that, state institutions will be overseen and staffed by highly qualified, ethical, and devoted public servants who conduct themselves with professionalism, care, and a strong sense of duty. We are committed to translating this vision into action in the areas of local government where we hold the responsibility of governing.

The conditions under which relocated residents live are unacceptable and highlight the lack of compassion, care and consideration from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. ActionSA urges residents to continue voicing their concerns and to use us as their mouthpiece in their fight for better living conditions and political change.
