ActionSA Calls on Steve Tshwete to Fix the Sewage and Flooding Crisis in Tokologo, Mhluzi

The people of Tokologo in Mhluzi have lived for years with conditions no family should accept. Main sewer lines run through the middle of their yards. Sewage blocks and spills repeatedly, leaving homes and yards dirty and unsafe.

When itrains, water floods into houses because the stormwater drains do not work. Furniture, appliances, and personal belongings are damaged. Children play next to sewage. Families sleep with the smell of waste in their homes.

During the building of the RDP houses, contractors, the project engineer, and the municipal project manager were on site.Residents were told the work was done properly. Once those teams left, the municipality walked away. The mistakes stayed behind. The people stayed behind.

This is not an insignificant problem. It is a failure of basic service. A home should protect a family. In Tokologo, the home itself has become the problem because pipes and drains were put in the wrong place and never corrected.

ActionSA urges the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality to treat Tokologo as a priority, not an afterthought. We call on the municipality to:

  • Move or properly protect the main sewer lines that run through yards.
  • Clear the blockages and stop the sewage spills.
  • Fix the stormwater drains so rainwater no longer floods houses.
  • Repair the damage caused by years of neglect.
  • Give residents a clear plan, with dates, and report back in public.

Service delivery in this municipality has collapsed. Water, roads, refuse and now basic drainage are failing in community after community. A municipality that cannot keep sewage out of people’s yards is not being led. It is running on autopilot. The current leadership must answer for this.

The people of Tokologo deserve clean yards, dry houses and dignity. They are not asking for favours.

They are asking for the services they were promised when those houses were built.

We call on residents of Tokologo, Mhluzi and the rest of Steve Tshwete to report these problems to ActionSA. If sewage is spilling in your yard, if your house floods when it rains, or if the municipality is ignoring you, tell us. Send photos, your stand number and a short description of what is happening. We will record every case, follow it up and keep pressure onthe municipality until the work is done.

Report to ActionSA: Cyprian Matjie 082 807 4148 mcmatjie@gmail.com

ActionSA will keep standing with this community until the work is done.
