ActionSA Cautiously Welcomes Health Department Investigation into Hospital’s Dubious Coal Tender

ActionSA notes and cautiously welcomes the internal investigation instituted by the Department of Health in Limpopo that relates to the coal tender which was issued to hospitals in the Province including those that do not have coal boilers.

This comes after CONLEF, an anti-graft NGO based in Limpopo, approached Health MEC, Poppy Ramathuba, to clarify the advertising of a tender which raised serious concerns about coal supply in hospitals that do not use coal.

Having initially responded with outright arrogance, dismissing this organisation and questioning its possession of information she regards ‘confidential’, we are pleased to see a change of tune, with the MEC taking accountability and committing to internal investigations into the allegations.

ActionSA will monitor this investigation closely in the hope that this is not just another ANC whitewash to conceal shenanigans in Ramathuba’s department. The days of departments issuing tenders to strategically loot state coffers are soon reaching their end.

We trust that this investigation will be conducted with the highest degree of integrity and transparency and that appropriate disciplinary action will be against those involved in the matter. Failing this, we will escalate the matter to the Hawks and ensure an investigation that fully satisfies the people of Limpopo ensues.
