ActionSA Concerned About Patients’ and Staff Safety After Fire at the Tembisa Hospital, Calls for Improved Maintenance Across all Hospitals

ActionSA is deeply concerned about the fire that engulfed the emergency unit of Tembisa hospital last night and is calling on the provincial health department to get to the bottom of this and report back to the residents as soon as possible. We are happy that the fire was contained, and no lives were lost.

ActionSA Spokesperson on Health, Emma More MPL, expressed concern that, like many others in the province, Tembisa hospital is one of Gauteng healthcare facilities struggling with health and safety compliance and poor maintenance. This is according to a recent report from the Gauteng Department of Health that none of the 37 public hospitals in Gauteng fully comply with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

This not only poses risks to patients and staff but also casts in doubt the successful implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) as R6 billion is required to bring these hospitals up to safety standard.

With Tembisa hospital well-known for inflated prices and corruption, we await the costs of repairs with apprehension.

ActionSA will await the outcomes of the full investigation into the cause of the fire and recommendations put forth and will pursue this matter with the relevant authorities to protect the lives of patients and staff as well as to safeguard our fiscal spending.
