ActionSA is deeply concerned about the worsening state of governance in our province, particularly the failure of six municipalities to submit their financial statements for auditing. This blatant lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable and severely undermines public trust in local government.
The affected municipalities are Kopanong, Maluti-A-Phofung, Mafube, Matjhabeng, Mohokare, and Masilonyana Local Municipalities. Their failure to comply with basic financial reporting requirements is a clear reflection of the governance crisis gripping our province and the entrenched corruption under ANC-led leadership.
Notably, in 2022, ActionSA wrote to the ANC leadership, during the tenure of Xolani Tseletsele as Mayor of Kopanong Municipality and Mxolisi Dukwana as MEC, warning of the risks and consequences associated with poor governance. Regrettably, those warnings were ignored.
ActionSA has consistently raised alarm about the ongoing dysfunction and financial mismanagement in Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality. A recent scandal involving the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), which failed to exercise proper oversight, has allowed corruption to persist unchecked. The municipality’s financial collapse is further evidenced by its staggering R8 billion debt to Eskom, which threatens electricity supply and exacerbates service delivery failures.
The recent court ruling exposing corruption and abuse of power in Maluti-A-Phofung serves as yet another damning indictment of the state of local governance. Despite multiple attempts by the national government to place the municipality under administration and address the crisis, no meaningful progress has been made.
The repeated interventions are a clear sign of the absence of strategic leadership. As ActionSA Free State, we cannot stand by while our province, especially its capital, deteriorates under our watch.
We therefore call on the implicated municipalities to take immediate corrective action and prioritise transparency and accountability in their financial management. The people of the Free State deserve honest leadership and the responsible use of public funds.
ActionSA will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that those entrusted with public service are held accountable.
ActionSA remains committed to delivering ethical, transparent, and accountable governance to restore the province’s future.
