ActionSA Gauteng together with ActionSA Joburg Region are deeply concerned and worried about the state of the province’s and municipal roads, particularly the dysfunctional traffic lights.
Following the statement released by ActionSA on the 12th of January 2025, ActionSA MPL Emma More and City of Johannesburg Councillor and Regional Chairperson Sello Mabelebele conducted oversight inspections on major provincial and municipal roads in Johannesburg on the 15th of January 2025. The level of traffic congestion caused by the malfunctioning traffic lights was both significant and disappointing.
What should be a short 15-minute drive during peak traffic from Randpark Ridge via Malibongwe Drive to North Riding Square took much longer due to the fact that out of the six traffic lights on that route, only one was working, while five were dysfunctional. This situation has escalated to the point where concerned citizens are taking it upon themselves to guide traffic and ensure smooth flow, in the absence of provincial and municipal traffic officers.
This issue is not limited to provincial roads. ActionSA also inspected municipal roads such as Boundary Road and Aureole Avenue near Jackal Creek Corner, where traffic lights have not been working for three years. These roads are in proximity to schools, meaning that with schools reopening and residents returning to work, people will spend a large amount of time on the road unnecessarily.
As mentioned in our previous statement, in Gauteng alone, our people lose 37 minutes each day on the road. When translated into monetary value, this loss amounts to nearly R26,000 per person per year due to the inefficiencies of both the provincial and municipal governments in this province. ActionSA is committed to holding both the provincial and municipal governments accountable and ensuring that they provide the relief needed for commuters.
We will ensure that the municipalities and departments of roads and transport collaborate effectively to resolve and address this critical issue. As ActionSA we implore both levels of government to ensure that within the next month all traffic lights in major roads are fixed to allow residents to travel smoothly to help enable economic growth that both the province and city so desperately need.
