ActionSA Concerned by the Levels of Crime in Ward 121 CoJ, Calls for the Deployment of a Mobile Police Station Unit
Press Statement by John Moodey MPL
ActionSA Member of the Community Safety Portfolio Committee in the Gauteng Legislature
ActionSA is deeply concerned by the escalating levels of crime in Ward 121 (Lawley 2 Ext 8 site), City of Johannesburg. We call on an urgent intervention from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.
The community in this ward has been severely affected by a surge in criminal activities, including robberies, housebreakings, and violent crimes. This has not only caused deep distress among residents but has also disrupted businesses and other economic activities in the area. Despite the best efforts of the local South African Police Service (SAPS), the scale of the problem continues to exceed their current capacity. To compound this high crime rate, the nearest police station is located 8 km away, making it difficult for the impoverished community to access.
In light of these challenges, ActionSA has written a letter to the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety to request the immediate deployment of a mobile police station in Ward 121. The presence of such a station would play a pivotal role in increasing police visibility, strengthening community-police relations, and providing a more accessible point of contact for residents to report crimes and seek assistance.
Furthermore, this intervention would help restore a sense of safety and security for the local residents.
It would also serve as a valuable resource for crime prevention initiatives and could support the collection of intelligence to address organized criminal activities in the area.
ActionSA has urged the MEC to consider the request as a matter of priority and provide a timeline for the deployment of the mobile police station. As a constructive opposition, ActionSA will avail itself to engage further on this matter and to assist in facilitating discussions with local stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative.
ActionSA remains committed to protecting residents, capacitating law enforcement in the fight against crime and the upholding of the rule of law and will follow this up at the Provincial Legislature to ensure that the community of Ward 121 are provided with a mobile police station that will reduce crime in the area.
