ActionSA Condemns Assassination Attempt on SARS Advocate Coreth Naude
Alan Beesley
ActionSA Member of Parliament
ActionSA strongly condemns the recent assassination attempt on South African Revenue Service (SARS) advocate Coreth Naude, which took place in Durban while she was performing her official duties on behalf of SARS investigating the affairs of Ms. Shaun Mkhize and one of her companies.
This senseless act of flagrant violence is an alarming indicator of the fact that we are fast becoming a Mafia State whose dastardly deeds threaten to destroy our country.
SARS plays a crucial role of revenue collection and bring the watchdog of our nation, tirelessly fighting against money laundering and corruption.
It is deeply concerning to witness substantial cuts to the SARS’s budget, with a nominal reduction of R769 million and a real cut of R1.3 billion. ActionSA contends that these cuts are not feasible and indefensible.
Given that SARS is responsible for collecting over 90% of the government’s revenue, it is ill-advised to further limit the capacity of this crucial institution.
If SARS cannot operate at full capacity, it will lead to significant constraints on the fiscal coffers, hampering the government’s ability to deliver essential services to the public and protect their staff who are more and more facing life threatening intimidation.
We wish Ms. Coreth Naude a speedy recovery and hope that this senseless attack does not deter her from continuing her critical work in holding those engaged in corrupt activities accountable.
ActionSA stands in solidarity with all individuals and institutions dedicated to upholding the rule of law and fighting corruption in South Africa.
We urge the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
