ActionSA Condemns Delay in Payments for Education and General Assistants by Gauteng’s Education Department

ActionSA strongly condemns the Gauteng Department of Education for its failure to ensure the timely payment of Education and General Assistants appointed through the Basic Education Employment Initiative. This inexcusable delay—allegedly due to ongoing data verification—reflects serious administrative shortcomings that have placed the livelihoods of thousands of young people at risk.

While we support measures to eliminate ghost employees, the department had ample time to complete verification processes prior to appointments being finalised. The fact that payments are now delayed indicates a lack of foresight and planning.

This is not the first time administrative inefficiencies have led to suffering by the most vulnerable. ActionSA demands urgent action from the department to resolve this crisis and implement safeguards to prevent its recurrence.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with the affected Education and General Assistants and call on the department to:

• Implement robust recruitment, verification, and payment systems that ensure prompt validation and disbursement of stipends;
• Develop proactive contingency plans to shield employees from the impact of future delays;
• Prioritise employee welfare, recognising that many of these young people rely on this income to support themselves and their families.

ActionSA Gauteng will continue to monitor developments closely. We expect immediate and tangible steps from MEC Matome Chiloane and the department to rectify this situation and uphold the dignity of those who serve in our schools.
