ActionSA Condemns Murder of Chesnay Patricia Keppler by SAPS Member
Dereleen James MP
ActionSA Member of Parliament
ActionSA expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Chesnay Patricia Keppler, a female crime prevention warden, who tragically lost her life in a senseless act of violence allegedly perpetrated by SAPS Sergeant Mandla Goodman Buthelezi over Christmas and Boxing Day. We stand in solidarity with all who are grieving this devastating loss.
The shocking events that unfolded at 04 Smarag Street in Eldorado Park highlight an appalling failure of the SAPS to protect the very people they are sworn to serve. It is alleged that Sgt Buthelezi, known to have been physically abusive in the past, forced the deceased into a state vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, assaulted her, and subsequently shot her through the kitchen window of her home.
This heinous act, compounded by allegations of ongoing abuse and corrupt conduct, underscores a dire crisis within the SAPS. It is unacceptable that a known corrupt officer was allowed to remain in active service without intervention.
On this tragic day, two additional victims were also shot and killed in separate incidents, further demonstrating the urgent need for safety and accountability within our communities.
ActionSA calls on the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner to take immediate and decisive action to address this tragedy and ensure that justice is served:
– The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) must provide regular updates to the family of the deceased and the Eldorado Park community on the progress of the investigation.
– The relevant ballistics unit in Johannesburg must prioritise the forensic examination of the firearm used in this crime to expedite the investigation.
– We demand a speedy and successful prosecution of Sgt Buthelezi to ensure that justice is served swiftly and transparently.
– An immediate deployment of a counter-corruption team to investigate allegations of systemic corruption within the Eldorado Park SAPS.
The community of Eldorado Park deserves better than this egregious betrayal of trust. We cannot allow SAPS officers to misuse their authority to harm the very people they are meant to protect.
ActionSA reiterates its commitment to holding public servants accountable and ensuring that no family must endure the pain of losing a loved one to preventable acts of violence.
