ActionSA condemns the behaviour displayed by the KZN Department of Education (DoE) Communications Officer, Mr Muzi Mahlambi, while live on radio station Vuma FM, where he publically terrorised a radio personality, Ms Jacinta Ngobese and a private citizen.
The private citizen resorted to publically displaying her discontentment in the lack of action taken by the department after her nephew was mauled by dogs whilst on school property, and have gone through various channels in an attempt for the department to offer necessary assistance, and responsibility for the unfortunate event, they have been met with emotionally unavailable government officials.
In an attempt to allow the DoE to correct their wrong, they were given the platform by Vuma FM to correct this matter and offer assistance where needed, while ensure the public that they will treat this matter with the sensitivity it deserves.
However, it was Mahlambi’s act of arrogance and lack of accountability which led him to denounce the citizen for finally using channels public platform such as social media and a radio station to publicise the issue, going as far as telling her that such actions will not bring closure to her or her nephew.
Amongst the many mandates for government officials, the most distinguished one is to serve the people of our country, however in this instance, Mahlambi displayed characteristics of a tyrant who seeks to gag those who speak against the ills of the DoE, infringing on the fundamental right of freedom of expression.
Most concerning, Mahlambi did not end his verbal abuse on radio, he further terrorised Ms Jacinta on her social media page, leaving unpleasant comments on her post, which she later took down.
Mahlambi’s behaviour parades the leeway that some government officials believe they have, when addressing members of the public, and we will not allow such behaviour to thrive.
Government officials like Mahlambi seem to be under the impression that they do no account to the public, but the public must account to them, and have allowed themselves to live under this delusion.
Therefore, will write to the MEC for Education, Ms Mbali Frazer, and lay a formal complaint against Mahlambi, calling on her to hold him accountable for his disturbing behaviour, and ensure that he understands what it means to account to the public they serve, while serving consequences for his actions.
