ActionSA Condemns the MEC of Education’s Response to the Vendor Ban

ActionSA is deeply disappointed by the response of the MEC of Education regarding the recent ban on registered vendors in Gauteng schools. For two weeks, these vendors, many of whom are elderly women striving to earn a living, were unfairly prevented and banned from selling food due to a food poisoning incident unrelated to them.

This ban has inflicted significant financial hardship on these hardworking South Africans, who were denied their income during this period. ActionSA regards this matter as a grave injustice and a failure of the provincial government. We are urging the MEC of Education to compensate these vendors for the average income they would have earned during the time they were unlawfully banned by the Department of Education.

In our inquiry to the MEC of Education, it was revealed that there is no plan in place to support and repay these vendors, despite their compliance with all requirements to sell food in schools. This lack of support is unacceptable.

ActionSA will continue to advocate for the immediate compensation of these registered vendors to ensure they do not bear the financial burden of an issue not of their making.
