In an effort to bolster our oversight role in the City of Johannesburg and restore a culture of accountability, two ActionSA Councillors have been elected as chairpersons of the Section 79 Finance and Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) committees, respectively.
Cllr Mpumi Edward has been elected as the Chairperson of Finance, while Cllr Vhengani Munyayi has been elected as the Chairperson of EISD.
Cllr Mpumi Edward is a TeamFixSA member for Public Service and has worked tirelessly to highlight the plight of security officers, ghost employees, and poor service across government departments.
Cllr Edward holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the University of Cape Town. She also has a Postgraduate Degree in Small Business and Entrepreneurship, an MBA from Regenesys Business School and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Zululand.
Cllr Edward has worked as a manager at the South African Revenue Service, her career spans various roles that provide her with a unique perspective on critical issues. Cllr Edward will bring the stability that has been sought in the Finance Committee.
At 32, Cllr Vhengani Munyayi is the youngest Section 79 Chairperson. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management and an Honours in Geography from the University of South Africa, as well as a qualification in Leadership in Municipal Governance from Witwatersrand University.
Cllr Munyayi’s motion to integrate Soweto residents from Eskom to City Power was passed by the Council, and he has also submitted a motion to abolish the bucket system. As ActionSA’s Whip of EISD, his team has been active in advocating for the rescinding of the R200 electricity surcharge and addressing issues related to illegal dumping, particularly in Kya Sands.
ActionSA is confident that Cllr Munyayi and Cllr Edward will serve the residents of Johannesburg with distinction.
