ActionSA Demands Accountability for School Built on Wetland in Tshwane
Press Statement by John Moodey
ActionSA Member of the Gauteng Legislature
ActionSA has noted with grave concern revelations that a full-service public school, Bachana Mokwena Primary School in Ga-Rankuwa, was built on a wetland – a gross display of negligence, poor planning and disregard for both environmental laws and the safety of learners.
It is unconscionable that, in a time of urgent need for functional and safe learning environments, a multi-million-rand public school could be constructed on ecologically sensitive and unsuitable land. This points to a fundamental failure in planning processes, interdepartmental coordination as well as adherence to building and environmental regulations.
This is symptomatic of the corruption that has besieged our provincial government which has also seen another public school, Mayibuye Primary in Alexandra, built on a wetland. This must come to an end.
ActionSA demands a transparent and public report from the Gauteng Departments of Infrastructure and Education detailing:
Who approved the location
Which environmental and building regulations were violated and
What disciplinary action will be taken.
How urgent environmental and structural assessments would be conducted to determine the risks posed to learners and staff.
Relocation or rehabilitation plans, funded not through further public loss, but through accountability measures against those responsible.
This scandal is a symptom of systemic failure, one where political deployment and tenderpreneurship take priority over integrity, competence and community’s well-being. ActionSA is committed to a government defined by ethical leadership, lawful development and transparent service delivery.
