ActionSA Demands An Urgent Inquiry Into The Closure of Zwide Library, and Municipal Mismanagement

ActionSA has written to Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Gary Van Niekerk concerning the distressing closure of the Zwide library.

The community’s outcry over this essential public facility’s shutdown highlights a severe failure in municipal management. Despite being slated for crucial repairs, the library was unexpectedly closed, leaving communities in Zwide, Kwazakhele, Veeplaas, Soweto on Sea, and Kwamagxaki without access to vital resources. Shockingly, instead of addressing the leaking roof, municipal staff opted to refurbish the undamaged floor, a decision that reeks of potential corruption.

In our letter, we request to know:

  • Who was responsible for deciding to repair and replace the floor carpeting with expensive composite wood flooring before the roof was repaired?
  • Why was the planned roof repair not done first?
  • What was the cost of the floor replacement?
  • Who will be held accountable for this ill-fated and patently poor decision-making, be it intentional or accidental?

This mismanagement not only neglects community needs but also risks further deterioration of the facility. ActionSA demands accountability for these decisions and urges immediate action to rectify this dire situation, emphasizing the crucial role libraries play in empowering disadvantaged communities.

An ActionSA government will ensure that critical infrastructure in our communities is maintained, and basic support services like those of libraries are increasingly capacitated to support the education system, build a strong foundation for learners and students, and safeguard much-needed jobs.
