ActionSA Demands Justice After Decade-Long Silence on Newborn Death Case

ActionSA expresses deep concern and outrage over the tragic death of newborn baby Moriri Lethokuhle, which allegedly resulted from negligence by medical staff at Themba Hospital in Mpumalanga.

It is unacceptable that, despite a case being opened at Kabokweni Police Station (Case No: C268/64/05/2014) on 02 May 2014, the family has yet to receive any answers or meaningful feedback from the Mpumalanga Department of Health. For over a decade, the family has been left without closure, justice, or accountability.

ActionSA strongly condemns the apparent failure by the Department to properly investigate the matter and to engage with the affected family. This silence reflects a serious disregard for accountability and the dignity of those who rely on public healthcare services.

We therefore call on the Mpumalanga Department of Health to urgently:

  • Release a full and transparent report detailing the circumstances surrounding the death of baby Moriri Lethokuhle
  • Provide a clear update on the status of the investigation
  • Explain what actions, if any, have been taken against the medical staff involved
  • Engage directly with the family to provide long-overdue answers and support

We further call on law enforcement authorities to prioritise this case and ensure that justice is not delayed any further.

No family should have to wait this long for answers, especially in a matter as serious as the loss of a newborn child. Accountability must prevail, and those responsible must be held to account.

ActionSA stands in solidarity with the family of Moriri Lethokuhle and will continue to demand justice until the truth is revealed and accountability is achieved.
