ActionSA Disappointed by IFP’s Withdrawal of Motion Against Delinquent EFF Speaker
Press Statement by Siyanda Makhubo
ActionSA City of Ekurhuleni Caucus Leader
ActionSA expresses disappointment in the IFP’s unjustified decision to withdraw a motion of no confidence in EFF Speaker of Council, Clir Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, which was to be considered by council today.
ActionSA’s disappointment stems from the fact that Clir Tshivhenga has presided over and failed to act on several chaotic council meetings, where councillors were assaulted by members of her caucus.
Her partisan manner in which she presided over council led to a scathing report from the bipartisan Ethics Committee, that found her guilty of failing to act against her own councillors. The report stated that she must read a formal apology to council and also fined her fellow councillors.
During times of political uncertainty and the shift of council politics away from majority control, the role of municipal legislatures in overseeing and addressing governance failures is becoming increasingly essential.
ActionSA recognises the IFP as an independent political party with which we have worked well in the past and encourages all parties in council to return to the negotiating table to resolve the governance crisis caused by Clir Tshivhenga’s chaotic tenure.
