ActionSA in the Merafong Region is deeply alarmed by the growing pattern of mismanagement, corruption, and blatant disregard for public funds in healthcare infrastructure projects across the region. We demand accountability for those implicated.
The recent findings by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on the unlawful R600 million AngloGold Ashanti Hospital refurbishment scandal, coupled with the prolonged neglect of the Khutsong South Clinic, paint a disturbing picture of a government hellbent on failure at the expense of the residents of Merafong.
The AngloGold Ashanti Hospital was meant to provide urgent COVID-19 care, yet only 147 patients were treated despite the astronomical expenditure of R600 million. Amongst companies that allegedly unlawfully benefitted from this scheme is NJR Projects, linked to state capture-accused Edwin Sodi, alongside several others that pocketed millions whilst healthcare services collapsed. The SIU’s findings confirm that procurement regulations were ignored, contracts were awarded without due diligence, and taxpayers’ money was wasted and, possibly, looted.
Similarly, the Khutsong South Clinic remains incomplete despite years of promises from the Gauteng government to complete it. Residents of Khutsong South are being forced to travel long distances for medical care whilst millions of rands remain unaccounted for in abandoned projects. ActionSA leadership, including Provincial Chairperson Funzi Ngobeni and Regional Chairperson Thomas Mvundle, personally visited both the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital and the Khutsong South Clinic last year to witness firsthand the government’s failures and hold them accountable.
This misuse of taxpayers’ money and total disregard of procurement processes cannot continue. ActionSA demands:
1. The immediate prosecution of all implicated officials and companies involved in the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital and Khutsong South Clinic scandals.
2. A full recovery of stolen public funds to ensure that resources meant for healthcare serve their rightful purpose.
3. A comprehensive forensic audit of all provincial and regional projects to expose and prevent further corruption.
4. Immediate transparency and a clear timeline for the completion of both the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital and Khutsong South Clinic, to ensure that residents receive the healthcare they deserve.
The Gauteng government has shown a repeated pattern of corruption, mismanagement, and exploitation of taxpayers’ money. The people of Merafong and Gauteng cannot continue to suffer while politically connected elites enrich themselves.
ActionSA remains committed to exposing corruption, demanding accountability, and ensuring that public funds are used to improve lives, not to sustain criminal networks.
