ActionSA Dismayed at the State of Eqinisweni Secondary School, Calls for Immediate Department Intervention

ActionSA is dismayed at the lack of proper infrastructure, ablution facilities and furniture as well as overcrowding at the Eqinisweni Secondary School, in Ivory Park, and calls for an immediate intervention from the Gauteng Department of Education.

Constructed to accommodate 1 600 learners, the school currently has 2 700 learners with no provision made for the additional 1 100 learners over the past five years.

ActionSA will write a letter to the Education MEC to appraise him of the situation that the school is in and demand an immediate as well as a long-term action plan on how to get the school’s current challenges addressed.

Amongst challenges faced by the school are:

– Inadequate and improperly maintained classroom infrastructure.

– Overcrowding

– Inadequate ablution facilities to cater for the additional learners.

– Because of overcrowding, providing learners with food under the nutritional programme has become a challenge.

– Disrepair of additional prefabricated classrooms.

– Not enough desks and/ or furniture to cater for the learners’ needs.

– Ill-discipline amongst learners.

Despite these insurmountable challenges, Eqinisweni achieved a remarkable 85% matric pass rate in

2024. Imagine what this school can achieve with a properly functioning and resourced facility?

ActionSA urges the department to intervene in ensuring that more classes and furniture are provided to accommodate the additional learners and, more importantly, measures are put in place to instill and maintain discipline within the school environment. Equally important is to ensure that learners have adequate access to the nutritional programme that is meant to be a buffer for the majority of our communities.
