ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum Strongly Condemns the Department of Basic Education’s Decision to Shut Down Hawkers and Sellers in Schools and their Surroundings
Press Statement by Sakhile Mathokoza
ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum Chairperson
The ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum strongly condemns the Department of Basic Education’s decision to shut down hawkers and sellers in schools and their surroundings. The community of Katlehong South, in a meeting held on 14th November 2024 at the DH William Hall, expressed their dismay at this unwarranted decision and viewed it as a direct attack on our mothers, who are elderly women trying to make a living, and an insult to all South African citizens, especially in the current economic climate.
ActionSA Youth Forum is calling for the Department of Basic Education to rescind its decision and, instead, pressure the government to close all illegal foreign nationals’ tuck shops in communities. These tuck shops are believed to have been the source of foodborne illnesses and deaths that have spiked in recent weeks and have been used as a tool to take away economic opportunities from South Africans, the youth in particular.
ActionSA Youth Forum is advocating for the freedom and protection of South African citizens, particularly the hawkers selling in and around school premises, and is demanding that the government support our people in running their businesses successfully. We believe that the government should prioritise the needs and well-being of its citizens and not prioritise illegal foreign nationals engaged in criminal activities in our country.
We are calling upon the government to take immediate action to address the concerns of the community and protect the rights of South African citizens. We demand justice and equality for all South Africans.
All peace-loving patriotic South African must rest assured that we will not rest until the entire local economy comes back to its rightful owners. We remain resolute and unapologetic when we say Spaza Shops are for Locals, and that shall remain our mission to deliver that future to our communities.
