ActionSA expresses deep concern over raw sewage flowing into the Kowie River in Port Alfred.
The relentless discharge of raw sewage exposes the colossal failure of the current government’s water and wastewater management in the province. Situated just meters away from the town’s hospitality and leisure businesses, this sewage spill poses a serious threat to the town’s crucial hospitality and tourism industry not to mention the enormous health hazard it poses to the whole community and all the key economic drivers.
The sewage threat extends beyond the Kowie River, affecting the unique “blue flag” Marina and renowned beaches and surfing destination—vital components of the local tourism industry. This alarming situation not only compromises community health but also has severe economic and environmental consequences.
This appalling situation comes to light as the ANC plans to launch its Provincial manifesto in Ndlambe, conveniently overlooking the urgent environmental and health crisis at hand. This is especially glaring in light of the incomplete water tower that compounds the consistent water shortages, particularly affecting the high-lying parts of the town and the townships.
It is unacceptable that the very communities relying on these essential services are neglected while the ANC pursues political posturing and grandstanding whilst the community has to endure their ineptitude in government.
Port Alfred is home to ActionSA’s Eastern Cape Premier Candidate, Athol Trollip and as a party, we have established branches in 70% of the wards in the Ndlambe Municipality. Consequently, Premier Oscar Mabuyane and his local ANC officials are clearly feeling the political heat and their woeful government will not go unchallenged.
The main reasons for slow economic growth and decline include poor political leadership, corruption, and failing public infrastructure—exactly what we are witnessing in Ndlambe. We can no longer continue on this track.
ActionSA will take urgent action to ensure that this hazardous sewage spill is addressed promptly, as it has dire consequences for the local community and its economy.
We implore Ndlambe Municipality residents not to follow the ANC Pied Piper Mabuyane, as he plays a deceptive tune, weaving fairytales of success in one of South Africa’s worst provinces.
An ActionSA government is one that understands the incredible potential of Agriculture and Tourism in the Eastern Cape. Under our governance, we will ensure the prioritisation of these sectors by fixing and upgrading critical infrastructure, including water systems, electricity, roads, and communication networks so that they can exploit their full potential.
This maintenance is essential for stimulating economic growth, encouraging tourism, and creating a fertile environment for Agriculture. The ANC has beyond doubt and debate shown that they are overwhelmed and cannot deal with these obstacles to economic growth and prosperity. It’s time for us to stand together and Fix SA through united Action.
We believe that only action can fix South Africa.
