ActionSA is extremely concerned about further delays to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) precinct in Edleen which threatens the safety and security of Ekurhuleni North communities, including Tembisa, Kempton Park and Edleen.
When ActionSA’s Tlhogi Moseki came into office as MMC for community safety in December 2021, the project was estimated to be at 20% completion, but whilst he was in office he fast-tracked construction – aiming that the project will be completed before the end of the year.
The Edleen precinct would see law enforcement closer to the communities and was a part of Operation Buya Mthetho – championed by Moseki – which is a multi-disciplinary operation to bring back the rule of law to the city.
It is therefore concerning that during the November sitting of the Ekurhuleni council, a report was received which indicated that further delays to the project would occur.
When the Ekurhuleni ActionSA caucus visited the Edleen precinct on Tuesday, the contractor onsite informed the caucus that the current delays were as a result of non-payment of services provided, and therefore downed tools until payments due to them are made.
The delays in the completion of the project is clear indication that the DA-led administration lacks the political will, and direction to fast track service delivery and to offer residents with the comforting of living, and operating businesses in safe and secure environments.
This again highlights why ActionSA decided to leave the Ekurhuleni multi-party government as it became clear that the basic service delivery needs of residents weren’t being prioritised and in some cases deteriorated under mayor Tania Campbell’s leadership.
As a constructive opposition, ActionSA will exhaust all available avenues within Council, including questions to the MMC for Community Safety, Cllr Rasilingwane, on why the project has been delayed to ensure that the precinct in completed within the 2022/23 financial year.
Rule of law is one of the core values of ActionSA, and the party will therefore work tirelessly to ensure that the residents of Ekurhuleni receive the safety and security services they deserve.
