ActionSA Free State Launches Petition Campaign to Compel CoGTSA to Address Sanitation Crisis
Patricia Kopane
ActionSA Free State Provincial Chairperson
After a visit to Allenridge in Matjhabeng Welkom where residents’ houses are immersed in sewage, ActionSA has elected to embark on a Petition Campaign to get 1000 signatures from the residents who are tired of the prevailing sanitation crisis that has engulfed the province.
What Allenridge’s residents are experiencing is the same for almost all the residents in the Free State.
This petition together with the memorandum will be sent to Free State CoGTA MEC, Ketso Makume.
This campaign kicks off has kicked off and will last until 18 August 2023, this will be followed by a march to MEC Makume’s office where we will hand the signatures and the memorandum.
We will give MEC Makume 14 days to respond, should he fail to respond we will press criminal charges against FS CoGTA for contravening Sections 24 and 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Section 24 of The National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), 108 of 1988.
The province’s sewage infrastructure is grossly dilapidated, it cannot handle huge volumes of sewage, new infrastructure is needed but the Province has turned a blind eye to this challenge. Clearly, there is no political will from the governing party to come up with lasting solutions to this issue.
This points to poor leadership because all that was needed was for the ANC government to maintain the existing infrastructure. They failed to do this and now the province is at a crisis point. ActionSA remains committed to ensuring that ANC respects and adheres to the Constitution by providing proper sanitation for the Free Staters. We will not fold our arms and watch Free State being washed with sewage.
We call on people who are tired of this callous government to sign this petition and force them to come up with a permanent solution to this epidemic.
