ActionSA Gauteng Dismayed at the State of Satellite School, Calls for More Educators and Better Infrastructure

ActionSA Gauteng is dismayed at the state of Alexander the 3rd Secondary School (commonly referred to as Satellite School) in Alexandra.

ActionSA Gauteng will write a letter to the Education MEC to appraise him of the situation that the school is in and demand an immediate as well as a long-term action plan on how to get the school’s staff complement and infrastructure supplemented.

Amongst challenges faced by the school are:
• No water as the borehole is not connected to taps or toilets, so learners have to bring their own water.
• No electricity.
• To cater for 602 learners, the school only has 4 qualified educators, including the principal, with 5 volunteers to assist with teaching.
• No administrative staff.
• Though it is a no-fee paying school, no National nutrition scheme is implemented, exposing learners to unnecessary hunger.
• The septic tank is a big hole with walls already cracking, no floor or covering. It poses a danger to both learners and educators.
• The school’s courtyard is littered with crushed boulders and sharp big stones which are difficult to walk on.
• There are 10 portable toilets provided as interim until the water connection happens. This is a health hazard for both learners and educators.
• The school opened three weeks later than others due to incompleteness of building.

What is even more disheartening is the fact that despite all these challenges, the district hasn’t visited the school yet to see the circumstances the children are forced to learn under.

As a party committed to the provision of quality education and learning, ActionSA Gauteng will not rest until the learners and educators of the Satellite School are provided with the necessary materials that will ensure quality educational outcomes.
