ActionSA Implores All Parties in eThekwini Council to Support Our Motion for Insourcing of Security Personnel

Tomorrow, Tuesday 15 August 2023, the eThekwini Council Meeting at the Durban International Conventional Centre (ICC) will take place and the motion which we had submitted to the Speaker of the Municipality on the call for insourcing of all security personnel at the Municipality will be debated and we are calling on all parties to support this motion.

We are pleased that, after previous delays from the Speaker to table this motion in Council, it has finally made it to the agenda for tomorrow’s sitting.

This is an opportunity for all political parties to lead the way and do the right thing and stop the exploitation of security personnel and if they truly care for the well-being and the restoration of the dignity of our security guards, while saving large sums of money for the Municipality, which can be channelled towards better service delivery.

The call for this motion stems from our manifesto where we promised voters that when we are in government, we will rid our government of the culture of outsourcing of security guards and cleaners.

Though we also believe that we do not have to be in government in order to be able to bring about positive change, we are working tirelessly towards implementing our manifesto promises whilst we are the opposition benches in eThekwini.

It is worth noting that the city heavily relies on private security companies to safeguard all municipal properties and entities and assets, which has resulted in the Municipality spending hefty amounts of money on these private companies to outsource personnel.

On many occasions, we have seen security personnel downing their tools due to the ongoing practice of exploitation in this field of work, many going months without receiving their salaries, as we have previously seen at the R.K. Khan Hospital in eThekwini, and at the General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital in Stanger.

However, such issues will and can be eradicated should the government take a bold step and begin the process of removing the middleman – security companies – and insource security guards, which will illuminate the need to strike for better wages, Unemployment Insurance Funds (UIF) benefits, and medical aid cover.

While security personnel are recognised as essential workers in our society, we have failed to comprehend how and why our government departments continue to exploit these individuals and subject them to working under unfavourable conditions.
