ActionSA implores the City of Joburg to address Kya Sands Illegal Dumping

ActionSA is gravely concerned about the rampant dumping at Kya Sands, Randburg. This unprecedented challenge continues to cause immeasurable damage to the health of those living nearby, and is in breach of a recent court order.

In 2010, the City of Johannesburg closed Kya Sands Landfill Site, however, the City failed to develop amicable rehabilitation plan, and as a result, the site has since been hijacked by criminal elements.

The landfill site is now run by mainly undocumented immigrants, who are heavily armed. There are more than two hundred unroadworthy trucks that dump waste in Kya Sands on a daily basis.

The surrounding area is always covered with smoke that emanates from constant burning of waste materials on site, affecting communities in the following areas: Bloubosrand; Cedar Lakes; Cedar Creek; Chartwell; Craigavon AH; Douglasdale; Farmall; Fourways; Hoogland; Houtkoppen; Inadan; Johannesburg-North; Jukskei Park; Kya Sand; Lion-Park; Maroeladal; Mostyn Park; Msawawa; Needwood; Nietgedacht; Noordhang; Pipeline; Riverbend; Salfred AH; Sandpark AH and Zandspruit.

ActionSA will use every available avenue to ensure that the City, together with all relevant stakeholders, priorities this matter, starting with ensuring that the City abide by the recent court judgment that states among other thing: the City must provide the Gauteng Local Division, Johannesburg Court with full air quality testing results, as well as expert report by 30 April 2025.

ActionSA is committed to ensuring improved service delivery to all residents in City of Johannesburg. We will be working closely with the affected communities in resolving this matter.
