ActionSA in Ekurhuleni Welcomes Progress on Waste Collection in Tembisa After Our Intervention
Siyanda Makhubo
ActionSA City of Ekurhuleni Caucus Leader
ActionSA welcomes progress on waste collection in Tembisa over the weekend after our intervention in the crisis. Although Tembisa remains dirty and illegal dumping sites need to be addressed urgently, ActionSA urges the MMC of Waste, Cllr Manamela, to prioritise the regular collection of waste in Tembisa.
ActionSA, last week, urged the ANC/EFF coalition to urgently prioritise waste collection in Tembisa, an area hard hit by sporadic waste collection. This is despite the fact that there is a R63 million budget for waste collection in the City.
At the centre of this ongoing problem is the City’s inability to pay contractors on time and this has had a direct effect on service delivery.
The tendering out of waste to companies has hollowed out the City’s ability to regularly collect waste as these companies can down tools at any point if payment is not made. The costs of tendering out these services should be going to acquiring our own refuse trucks and insourcing waste workers.
Over the long term, this saves the City money and takes money out of the pockets of politically connected tendrepreneurs. Now more than ever, the City needs to begin prioritising increasing revenue collection and cutting down on wasteful contracts that kills the City’s cashflow every month and hinders our ability to build up cash reserves.
The new MMC for finance, Cllr Dlabathi, has begun several initiatives to increase revenue collection, including clamping down on hijacked buildings, however, we urge MMC Dlabathi to look seriously into waste contracts into the city as well.
As an constructive opposition in Ekurhuleni, we will continue to intervene wherever possible to make sure services are delivered to the residents.
