ActionSA Joburg Calls for an Amicable Solution Between the City and Eskom Impasse
Zark Lebatlang
ActionSA CoJ Chief Whip
ActionSA has noted with grave concern the notice of intent to interrupt power supply in the City of Johannesburg. We take this matter extremely seriously, considering the dire consequences it will have on our residents.
South Africans recently celebrated 200 days without load shedding; this interruption would reverse Eskom’s progress made during that period. We urge Eskom, the City of Johannesburg, and City Power to engage in urgent dialogue, rather than resorting to grandstanding, which harms our residents.
Communicating through courts or media will only exacerbate the problem; a collaborative approach is necessary. While acknowledging submissions from all parties, we firmly believe an amicable solution can be found.
The ActionSA Joburg Caucus will engage the City of Johannesburg to find a lasting solution. City Power has raised concerns about overbilling and requested Eskom to adjust to no avail. We encourage City Power to continue aggressive revenue collection and disconnect illegal connections, which may impact the city’s bill from Eskom.
ActionSA stands with residents and will not allow the City and Eskom to use them as collateral damage. We demand that parties involved address this matter with the urgency it deserves. Law abiding, paying customers should not suffer due to poor problem-solving mechanisms and reckless decisions.
