ActionSA Joburg Caucus calls for an urgent investigation over R4 million spent at the Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel in Alexandra

ActionSA Johannesburg Caucus is calling for an urgent investigation following the roof and ceiling installation at the Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

The city’s Human Settlements department claims that it spent over four million rand on roofing and ceiling installation at the hostel.

This after, ActionSA raised suspicions after demanding a breakdown of this particular report through Section79 Human Settlement committee over the work done at the hostel and demanded a budget breakdown of the exact costs spent on the project.

ActionSA Caucus believes that the work done at the facility does not reflect the amount spent on the project and that there are missing links on the invoice.
According to the authorisation order, more than R1,3 million was authorised by the insurance company for repairs and labour, however, the total cost for the project amounted to more than R4,3 million.

ActionSA cannot sit and watch while public money is being spent without consideration.
We are appalled with the state of the building; it can’t be correct. At this stage, we are calling for an urgent investigation into the matter.

We want to know if the project was tendered for, where the three million rand is coming from, and why there are missing signatures on the authorisation order. We want a thorough probe into the matter.

What raises eyebrows even worse – is while the insurance claim amounts to more than a million rand, where is the rest of the money coming from?
