ActionSA Joburg Caucus Concerned About Mayor Gwamanda’s Lack of Plans to Rescue Johannesburg from Crisis

ActionSA Johannesburg Caucus is concerned by the absence of a detailed plan to rescue the city during Executive Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s State of the City Address. The mayor’s speech was instead characterised by a wish list and bits from his maiden speech.

Following his address, it has become apparent that less work has been done since Gwamanda ascended to his mayoral position. Instead, he praised Joschco, which was supposed to be one of the best revenue generators for the City of Johannesburg; however, due to maladministration, it lost R373 million in the last financial year.

Although we welcome the distribution of nearly 10,000 units to deserving residents by Joshco and the creation of 594 internships with the city, Gwamanda’s administration has failed to play an instrumental role in addressing the high unemployment rates plaguing Johannesburg.

It is ridiculous and insulting that the mayor could brag about distributing 350 bursaries through the Youth Directorate while millions of young people continue to languish in the streets.

Furthermore, we are concerned by the absence of a pragmatic plan to arrest the water crisis. It is evident that the mayor and the ANC-EFF Coalition of Doom have no plan to address this issue. Despite this, we urge the GLU to invest in reservoirs, remove the current asbestos pipes, and replace them with PVCs.

Matters have only worsened since the mayor ascended to power, as the rule of law has collapsed, and the city is literally burningunder his watch. It is a tragedy that residents are subjected to such poor leadership, which lacks a clear and concise plan for how it plans to mitigate this scourge.
