ActionSA Joburg Caucus reject ANC/EFF proposed Tariff Hikes

ActionSA Joburg Caucus vehemently objects to the unjustified proposed tariff hikes. At this current juncture, service delivery in the City of Johannesburg is at its all-time low. The revenue collection departments are failing dismally to collect monies owed to the City.

In the previous financial year, the following entities reported losses that amounted to billions of rands: City Power R 1.8 billion, Metrobus R66 million, JDA R34 million, Joshco R373 million, JRA R429 million, and Pikitup R383 million.

If we agree to these senseless tariff hikes, we will be indirectly sponsoring mediocre but, most importantly, exposing our residents to exploitation. Johannesburg Water loses a considerable amount of revenue owing to its unreliable dinosaur infrastructure, and to suggest a 7.7% tariff hike is an insult to the taxpayers.

ActionSA Joburg Caucus strongly believes that the City must place more emphasis on service delivery while improving the revenue collection system.

The ANC/EFF coalition in the City of Johannesburg has regressed from being a pro-poor government to a self-centred administration that ignores the plight of our residents.

As ActionSA Joburg Caucus, we will reject this item when it is presented in Council. While we acknowledge the need to collect revenue, that need does not supersede the reality that millions of our taxpayers are struggling to make ends meet.

As a result, we want to appeal to the conscious of the ANC/EFF-led administration to halt the tariff hikes and focus on improving service delivery.
